"We Rely on Compassion" - Film Discussion on the Long Day of Dementia

Radio Helsinki, Freies Radio Graz

Broadcast 7 November 2022 17:00 -18:00

From 21 to 23 September 2022 the Long Days of Dementia took place in Graz. They are intended to set an example against the stigmatization of people with dementia. On the first day, along with other program items, the film Mitgefuhl (Compassion) was presented. The film is about a small Danish nursing home that relies on cake, champagne and compassion instead of medication. The residents live in a kind of shared flat and the founder May Bjerre Eiby focuses on "care." Touch, conversation, the joy of community and experiencing nature are part of the recipe. This means that the residents have to take less than one medication per day on average, which is far below the normal average.

"A plea for a dignified and happy end of life."

Today we listen to the discussion about the film in which Werner Ranacher moderates, with Robert Krotzer (City Councilor for Health of the City of Graz), Johanna Constantini (psychologist and writer), Alexis Matzawrakos (gerontopsychologist), Martina Schmidhuber (philosopher and ethicist), Sabine Schuster - Harg (Diploma in Health and Nursing) talk about dementia and new forms of care.

The film can be viewed here free of charge until 27 December 2022.
