Images of Old Age in Nursing Care

Begin of page section: Contents:

Negative attitudes towards older people are often a social problem that can destabilize a society. Particularly negative attitudes from health professionals have an impact on the treatment and care of a highly vulnerable group. Previous studies show that negative age stereotypes can lead to negative health outcomes, including a higher rate of hospitalization. Therefore, stereotypes and negative attitudes, especially among health professionals, should be avoided in order to ensure high-quality treatment and care for older people. The aim of this project is to examine the attitudes of carers towards older women and men through quantitative surveys. As part of this project, there is a collaboration with the University of Gothenburg. Together with colleagues from the Swedish university, pilot surveys and instrument tests on the subject have so far been carried out. A representative survey of nurses in both countries is to be carried out soon.
