"God" by Ferdinand von Schirach

Version for the Schauspielhaus Graz by Daniel Grünauer and Bernd Mottl

Summary: Mr. Gärtner no longer wants to live. After the agonizing death of his wife three years ago, the retired architect's sense, zest and courage for life have disappeared. Sons, friends and doctors have tried to dissuade him, but he wants only one thing: to end his life with 15 grams of sodium pentobarbital. But instead of going to an aid-in-dying organization in Switzerland, Mr. Gärtner fulfills his wife's deathbed wish: "Do it right." He takes his request to the ethics committee. Lecture by Mag. Dr. Platzer: "Assisted suicide - opinion formation or opinion steering?"

Moderated by Timo Staaks, B.A., M.Ed.

Several countries, including Austria and Germany, have enacted regulations on assisted suicide in recent years. In doing so, the highest courts have primarily strengthened the right to self-determination. However, the concrete legal formulations are still the subject of controversial debate. In his play "Gott," Ferdinand von Schirach explores the question of whether assisted suicide should only be permitted for people suffering from a disease that leads to death or also for elderly people without a disease. The audience can participate in the decision-making process.

The lecture will give a brief overview of the legal and ethical arguments on this controversial topic. In addition, it will be put up for discussion to what extent plays or films in which the audience can vote on sensitive fundamental rights issues can or should steer the social debate. (Johann Platzer)

Mag. Dr. Johann Platzer
